Biography: Giovanni Martino was born in Philadelphia in 1908. At the age of 16, he was apprenticed to W.P. Schoonmaker for two years, studying commercial art. He studied at the Spring Garden Institute, La France Art Institute and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. He was also an Academician of the National Academy of Design. Martino was awarded prizes from: The Philadelphia Art Alliance*, 1934; The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 1940; DaVinci Alliance, 1939, 1940, 1944; The National Academy of Design, 1941, 1942; The Woodmere Art Gallery, 1941; The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts*, 1942; Sweat Memorial Museum, 1946; State Teachers College, 1946; and Pepsi Cola, 1946. He has exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts*, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Art Institute of Chicago, and at the Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco in 1939. The artist died in 1997.
