Biography: John Twachtman was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1853, he studied there at the Mechanics Institute before leaving for further work at the Royal Academy in Munich. Before returning to the U.S., Twachtman also studied and taught in Venice, Florence, Holland, and Paris, where he picked up the low-keyed tonalist palette of J.M. Whistler. Back in the states, he bought land in Greenwich, CT, which he painted regularly. His palette brightened considerably toward the end of his life. He is best remembered as one of America's foremost Impressionists, and as a founding member of the Ten American Painters.
