2 volumes, 4to (264 x 206 mm). 2 engraved frontispieces, 2 engraved titles, engraved portrait, and 13 engraved plates by Medland after Stothard. (Some minor spotting or offsetting.) Contemporary tan calf, gilt double fillet, blind roll-tool border, spines in 5 compartments with 4 raised bands, gilt-lettered in 2, the rest gilt, marbled edges (some light wear to joints, a few corners bumped). Provenance: John Anderson (bookplate).
Later edition, LARGE PAPER COPY, with George Chalmers' "The Life of Daniel Defoe" in vol. II. Of Defoe's novel, Samuel Johnson observed, "nobody ever laid it down without wishing it were longer."
