This dreamy David Hockney poster features Celia in a Black Dress with White Flowers, 1972, with wonderful hand-drawn Hockney details all around the margins and lovely multicolored underlining on all the text. We love the posters where David takes over the factory print process and makes these mass-produced objects look handmade. This one was produced by Petersburg Press for David's July 1980 show 'David Hockney: Travels with Pen, Pencil and Ink / Drawings and Prints 1961-1979.' As with all the Petersburg Press Hockney posters, this was designed in concert with the artist and produced not in a set format but in a size that matched the art. Although this show was at Tate, it was curated by Petersburg.
In his foreword for 'Hockney Posters' (1987), Eric Shanes writes: 'For an exhibition of his collection of drawings and prints entitled Travels with Pen, Pencil, and Ink, held at the Tate Gallery in 1980, Hockney created a pictorial frame around the reproduction of a drawing of Celia Birtwell, and played a characteristic game by adding stresses to the lettering, even underlining the word 'free' to emphasize the accessible nature of the show.
Approximate dimensions: 20 x 30 in; 50.8 x 76.2 cm.
