Join Julien’s on April 28-29, 2017 for property from the rowdiest, roughest and most beloved celebrities, assembled in one sale at the 2017 Hollywood Legends auction. The auction features Property from the Estate of Patrick Swayze, star of Dirty Dancing, Point Break, Road House and Ghost, who was quite a real cowboy in his personal life. Property includes items from Swayze’s personal and professional life including highlights: Patrick Swayze’s leather jacket from the film Dirty Dancing (Estimate: $4,000-$6,000); his shirt and shoes from the iconic film Ghost (Estimate: $2,000-$4,000); Patrick Swayze’s Golden Globe nomination certificate (Estimate: $800-$1,200); a collection of script packets from Season 16 of Saturday Night Live when Swayze hosted (Estimate: $600-$800); a Patrick Swayze Point Break worn O’Neill wetsuit (Estimate: $2,000-$4,000); a Point Break film used surfboard (Estimate: $4,000-$6,000) and his Point Break skydiving gear (Estimate: $1,000-$2,000).

Cowboy genre items included in the auction are from Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal’s wardrobe worn in the 2005 Oscar winning film Brokeback Mountain. These costume pieces are being offered for the first time and are accompanied by production photographs taken on set of the stars in the ensembles. ($4,000-$20,000). John Travolta’s Urban Cowboy Western shirts are also vying for toughest costume on the auction block ($800-$4,000), as are Rambo III prop knives custom designed to Sylvester Stallone’s personal specifications. Also featured is the King of Cool, Steve McQueen, whose 1972 Honda motorcycle ($50,000-$70,000) along with his 1969 racing jacket ($40,000-60,000), top them all.

Doris Roberts became everyone’s Mom in her portrayal of Marie on Everyone Loves Raymond. But Roberts’ life was far more complicated and interesting as evidenced by the Property from her Estate. From friendships with some of the greatest authors of our time to her outstanding art collection and beautiful costume jewelry, it is obvious that comedy was only a small part of Roberts’ legacy.

Other highlights in this auction include: a platinum blonde wig worn by Marilyn Monroe as Roslyn Taber in her final 1961 completed film The Misfits (Estimate: $20,000-$40,000); a Marilyn Monroe personal vanity case ($1,500-$2,500); a selection of items from the career of Barbra Streisand including her Funny Girl (1968) traveling jacket (Estimate: $2,000-$4,000); a gown worn by Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl (Estimate: $2,000-$4,000); and Daniel Craig’s James Bond dinner suit designed by Tom Ford for Spectre (2015), with the embroidered label sewn into the interior pocket that reads “Tom Ford/Daniel Craig/Bond 24” (Estimate: $50,000-$60,000).

The Old Print Shop, Inc has handled the work of Stow Wengenroth for over fourty years.  These prints, drawings, and watercolors are a selection of the inventory that is available of the artists' work.

Stow Wengenroth is a well known artist who created wonderful images of New England, New York City, and Long Island.  He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 25, 1906, to Frederick Wengenroth, an architect, and Isabelle Stow, a textile designer.  He studied at the Art Students League in 1923 with George Bridgman, then at the Grand Central School of Art with Wyman Adams.  During the summers in the 1920’s, he would go to Woodstock, New York, to work with John Carlson or to Eastport, Maine, and work with George Ennis.  It was Ennis in 1929 who recommended that Wengenroth should think about working in lithography.  He felt that his drawing style suited the medium.  In 1931 Wengenroth published his first lithographs - all images in and around Eastport, Maine.  He had his first one artist exhibition in 1931 at Macbeth Gallery showcasing his lithographs and drybrush drawings.

Wengenroth used lithography as his primary form of artistic expression.  His drawings at this time were almost all in the drybrush technique.  This is because drybrush drawings closely resemble how a lithograph will look when printed.  When he found a drawing pleasing, he would walk from Brooklyn to George Miller’s studio and pick up a lithographic stone and carry it to his studio.  There he would interpret his drybrush drawings, which were always larger than the finished lithographs.  Once drawn, he would carry the stone back to Miller’s studio in New York for printing.  Because of the weight of the lithographic stones (many weighing 75 to 90 pounds), Wengenroth moved his studio to Manhattan to be closer to Miller’s studio.  For a while his studio was at 51 West Tenth Street, a building that was occupied by many artists.  The studio he used was once occupied by Winslow Homer.

A turning point in Wengenroth’s life was when he met Edith Flack Ackley.  Her first husband, a jewelry designer, had passed away.  Ackley came to the relationship with a daughter named Telka.  Ackley was born in Greenport, New York, a small community on the north fork of Long Island.  She also was an artist, beginning her career as a painter; however, at the time of their relationship, she was designing and making marionettes.  She was the author of several books including  Marionettes: East to Make! Fun to Use!  Her daughter illustrated her second book Dolls to Make for Fun and Profit.  The couple married in 1936.  By this time, Wengenroth’s lithographs were popular with collectors; and he was represented by several galleries including Kennedy Galleries, Weyhe Gallery, Grand Central Art Galleries, and Goodspeeds Bookshop.  Edith had several exhibitions of her marionettes at Macbeth Gallery.

Later in his life, Wengenroth stated that his wife was the most influential person in his work.  She was an extra pair of eyes on every lithograph, she understood the creative struggle, and shared his love of art and nature.  They spent many summers in Maine, nine in Port Clyde, one in Boothbay Harbor, one in Monhegan, one in Corea, one in Castine and several in Wiscasset.  In the 1950’s they purchased a home in Greenport, Long Island, as did Wengenroth’s parents. However, they continued their travels in New England for images.

His wife suffered from arthritis in later years, and she passed away in 1970.  Wengenroth did a lithograph entitled Memory in her honor.  After his wife’s death, he spent more time in New England eventually settling in Rockport, Massachusetts, where he met Harriet Matson.  They were married in in 1974.

Wengenroth was a master at crayon lithography.  He published books and articles on the subject of lithography, including Making a Lithograph in 1936 and numerous articles in the Print Collectors Quarterly.  The majority of his lithographs are black and white.  He printed a few in two colors which have a grey background for atmosphere then black for the information.  One has to look closely to even see the second color.  He preferred his stones to have a bit of a grain, so they were not sanded smooth, as he used the grain to his advantage in these images.

The artist’s lithographs are in most museums across the United States and many in Europe.  Some have very large collections of his work.  Two with large collections are the Boston Public Library and Brown University Library.  These collections have extensive drybrush drawings and lithographs.  His work is also in in the Brooklyn Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, Cooper Hewitt, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York Public Library, Peabody Essex Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art.

Wengenroth received many professional honors and awards.  He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1938 and the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1942.  He was a member of Albany Print Club, Audubon Artists, Prairie Printmakers, Printmakers Society of California, Rockport Art Association, Salmagundi Club, and the Society of American Graphic Artists.

Throughout his career Wengenroth produced 369 different lithographs and many more drybrush drawings.  After his first wife passed away in 1970, he took up watercolor.  He had not worked in watercolor since the 1920’s and produced a remarkable but small body of watercolors.  Most were not signed by the artist.  He died on January 22, 1978 in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
