Published and printed by Galerie Maeght, France. Braque was less interested in political or social commentary than other Modernists, instead concentrating more on purist explorations of composition and space. Size: 9.75" L x 13.875" W (24.8 cm x 35.2 cm); 21" L x 28" W (53.3 cm x 71.1 cm) with mat and frame
The technique used to create this piece is collotype and pochoir. Pochoir, French for stencil, is a term used for hand colored prints made with stencils to mask out areas where color is not needed. Collotype is a dichromate-based photographic process invented by Alphonse Poitevin in 1856 that was used for mechanical printing before less expensive offset lithography was invented.
Georges Braque is perhaps most famous for being a pioneer of Cubism, developing the avant garde style with Pablo Picasso following association with the Fauves. However, Braque had a very long career that extended well beyond the heyday of Fauvism and Cubism. Throughout his life, his oeuvre focused on still lifes, understanding and interpreting objects from various points of view and perspectives via color, texture, and line. Less interested in being a celebrity in the art world, Braque was a relatively cerebral artist known for spending lengthy periods of quite time in his studio.
