Auction Description

The Silk Horizon - Asian Art & Decorative Objects by Gray's Auctioneers

Welcome to an exceptional auction event meticulously curated for discerning collectors, visionary interior designers, and passionate treasure hunters alike. Today, we unveil a magnificent assemblage of Asian art, textiles, and antiquities that have weathered dynastic transitions, global trade routes, and the test of time. For the serious connoisseur, this sale presents an undisputed gallery of historical rarities, including sacred Tibetan thangkas and rare imperial-style textiles that demand a place of honor in a private vault or dedicated gallery space. Interior designers will discover an array of high-drama, heavily textured accent pieces that promise to ground a modern room with centuries of narrative. For our casual treasure hunters, we invite you to appreciate the inimitable character of the past; minor glaze skips, honest age cracks, and beautifully stabilized antique elements are not imperfections, but the literal fingerprints of history that add unparalleled soul to a collection.

Among our premier textiles is Lot 7, a magnificent 18th-century Qing Dynasty Nine Dragon Silk and Gold Metallic Thread Embroidery Panel. This  masterwork centers on a flawlessly detailed gilt-embroidered dragon chasing a flaming pearl of wisdom, enveloped by eight smaller dragons traversing satin-stitch ruyi-shaped clouds and crashing ocean waves. Rendered on a rare apricot-colored satin ground and securely mounted to a wooden stretcher, this breathtaking artifact showcases minor, honest signs of its great age—such as faint water stains and slight fiber looseness on an upper claw—which only validate its authentic 18th-century origin for the serious textile collector.

For those seeking monumental sculptural gravity, Lot 1 presents a commanding 47-inch Chinese Gilt Carved Wood Buddha and Lion Statue from the 20th century. This imposing piece depicts the Bodhisattva Manjusri, known in China as Wenshu, resting in serene contemplation atop a powerful, stylized lion. Rising dramatically behind his head is an intricately pierced, flaming aureole that captures light beautifully, making this massive, heavily carved estate piece an instant focal point designed to establish architectural scale in a grand foyer or a sophisticated library.

Architectural enthusiasts will gravitate toward Lot 13, a handsome pair of  Chinese Carved Hardwood Corbels. These structural brackets were originally engineered to support heavy horizontal beams in traditional residences or regional temples, showcasing the high-relief openwork carving that defined late Qing folk art. While they exhibit authentic structural wood cracks and one carved figure is missing a hand from its decades in situ, these beautifully aged fragments are highly sought-after artifacts that look spectacular when styled as standalone sculptures or mounted on modern custom iron gallery stands.

Porcelain collectors have a rare opportunity with Lot 5, a large Chinese Blanc de Chine Porcelain Guanyin Figure dating to the early 20th century. Renowned for its milk-white, jade-like glaze, this depiction of the Goddess of Mercy stands 21 inches tall and projects an aura of absolute serenity. The figure carries localized historic staining and a missing finger on one hand, making this an ideal acquisition for designers looking for a statuesque, authentic period ceramic that tells a genuine story of survival and domestic devotion.

For classical dining spaces and grand shelf styling, Lot 84 offers an expansive 14-inch Chinese Export Rose Medallion Porcelain Bowl from the 20th century. True to the beloved Famille Rose tradition, it features alternating wedge-shaped reserves depicting lively domestic courtyard scenes and vibrant botanical motifs with birds and butterflies, all framed by dense, gold-gilt borders. Presenting minor enamel loss and original adhesive residue on the underside from long-term display, this sprawling bowl offers a rich color palette that perfectly anchors a grand dining centerpiece or an entry table vignette.

Finally, for the connoisseur of diminutive luxury, Lot 46 presents a late Meiji-period Japanese Kinrande Porcelain Saki Cup. This exquisite piece demonstrates the legendary "gold brocade" technique, wherein master artisans applied meticulous gilt scrollwork directly over a vibrant red glazed ground to mimic opulent woven silk. Offered in its original protective storage box, the cup features a minor chip on the underside of its base ring that does not compromise its display value, making it a rare and accessible jewel of late 19th-century Japanese ceramic mastery.

These are just a few of the more than 150 lots up for auction on August 19th at 10am. Preview is available from  August 13th, 10am - 5pm, Tues - Fri; Saturdays and Mondays by appointment.
