Jenny Saville

British, b.1970. Jenny Saville’s work is recognized for her unconventional figurative paintings that challenge the societal norms and the objectification of the female body and its potential. Her contemporary work portrays nudes of women with grotesque bodies, in extreme state, often bleeding or violently gripping their own flesh, and bears a marked similarity to the portraits of butchered animals. Her subjects are borrowed from her everyday observations of the lives of American women. She works with massive canvases to allow viewers to see the details of her brushstrokes and layering and by rendering these oil paintings in a matte finish, she was able to establish her signature style in abstract realism.
