Karl Bodmer (1809 - 1893) was a Swiss painter and engraver, known for his meticulous portraits of Native people of North America and their environments. In Zurich, after early training in the studio of some famous European masters, he was engaged, at the will of Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied, to travel to the American West in 1832. Bodmer worked on over 400 paintings and sketches during the period of this journey, depicting ideas of life and nature with the uncanny authenticity of landscapes and a great variety of cultures that he encountered. Most of these art pieces include images of various tribes among American Indians that illustrate their clothing, rituals, and interaction with nature. These works thus have great historical value as they shed light on the lives of the Indigenous peoples in the 19th century.
