Luigi Lucioni

American, 1900 – 1988, Luigi Lucioni was a painter notable for his Vermont landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. Luigi Lucioni’s paintings depicted realism and distinct elements prominent during the 1920s, like mass-produced articles and upcoming technologies. Luigi Lucioni’s portraits portrayed detailings like photographs. The precision in his work was due to his liking for the Renaissance-era arts and academic painting techniques. The artist initially trained as an etcher that perfected his precision techniques.

The artist was born in Malnate, Italy, on November 4, 1900. The artist started drawing from an early age. When he was six years old, he started attending geometrical drawing classes. His tutor Miss Gadisco recognized his talent and encouraged Lucioni to pursue a career in etching and drawing. In 1911 the painter’s family moved to New York and settled in New Jersey. Although the artist did not finish primary schooling, he was accepted at the Cooper Union when he was 15 and started studying painting under famous American mural painter William de Leftwich Dodge. While studying arts, he also worked at an engraving firm in Brooklyn. Later he went to attend the National Academy of Design. It was here that etcher William Auerbach Levy introduced him to etching techniques.
