David Yurman

American, 1942. In 1942, David Yurman was born in Long Island, New York. Yurman used to sell miniature sculptures during his school life. But his creative ambitions were only launched after Yurman met Ernesto Gonzales, a Cuban welder, and sculptor. Gonzales taught him welding and how to use a hot torch to heat and fuse metal. Yurman's fascination with sculpting grew, and he started to create his own metal sculptures and jewelry pieces. Yurman temporarily attended New York University after finishing high school but dropped out after his freshman year. He traveled his journey to California, and on the Big Sur coastline, he joined a beatnik artist community. The Art Movement lured Yurman back to New York City in the late 1960s.

Yurman collaborated with a sculptor named Hans Van de Bovenkamp, recognized for his huge, abstract works.  Yurman met Sybil Kleinrock, a Bronx local, and talented painter, at Bovenkamp's West Village workshop and immediately they fell in love. Yurman's journey into the jewelry business was mostly accidental. One day, Sybil wore a sculptural-inspired outfit made by Yurman to an art gallery event. The gallery owner requested Yurman's design be replicated and sold but he turned down the offer, stating that Sybil's gift was too precious to commercially distribute and sell. This demonstrated that Yurman's creations had a strong market. The romantic couple established their company, David Yurman in 1980, after getting married in 1979. Yurman debuted his signature item -- the cable bracelet, in 1983. The David Yurman brand also launched his double-helix of twisting silver strands with finial ends, which became a huge success.
