An auction of delightful breadth and occasional audacity, this sale pairs strong American works—led by William Sommer—with European paintings, decorative arts, and a surprising modern edge (yes, even Pablo Picasso makes an appearance). From scholarly landscapes to exuberant abstraction, plus furniture, silver, and more glass goblets than one could reasonably need, the offering is equal parts refinement and temptation—best approached with discernment and a paddle at the ready.

Auction Description

Visions Unveiled: A Global Collection by Gray's Auctioneers

Step right in—this is not your average polite little auction. This is a full-bodied, globe-trotting, century-spanning affair where American modernism rubs shoulders with European classicism, and where fine art, furniture, and decorative objects mingle like guests at a slightly over-served salon.

At the heart of the sale is a deeply satisfying run of fine art, anchored by a notable group of works by Todd Boppel, whose richly layered canvases (often infused with bronze pigment for that extra “I’m not like other paintings” glow) set the tone early. From there, the roster unfolds with admirable confidence: American regionalists, European academicians, and a few intriguing attributions that will either reward the astute buyer—or at least make for excellent dinner conversation.

Particular highlights include a strong selection of works by William Sommer (clearly, he was busy—and thankfully so), ranging from intimate studies to fully realized compositions, offering collectors a rare opportunity to explore the breadth of a single artist’s hand. Frederick Judd Waugh brings his signature drama to crashing waves and dusky landscapes, while pieces by artists such as Charles H. Hubbell and Julius Melchers ground the sale in solid, historical American painting traditions.

And just when you think you’ve got the tone figured out, along comes a lithograph by Picasso—because subtlety is overrated.

The European contingent does not disappoint. From a 17th-century Italian religious scene to French and Belgian portraiture, the sale carries a certain Old World gravitas—tempered, of course, by the occasional pastoral cow or slightly judgmental gentleman sitter.

Then there’s the contemporary twist: an extensive collection of works by James Massena March. Abstract, energetic, and unapologetically prolific, these paintings inject the sale with a welcome jolt of modern momentum. Love them or debate them—either way, they refuse to be ignored.

Beyond the walls, the auction expands into a richly layered offering of decorative arts and furnishings. Expect everything from French gilt mirrors grand enough to make you reconsider your ceiling height, to Arts & Crafts pieces that whisper (politely) of craftsmanship and restraint. Nautical items, Asian decorative works, and an impressive array of lighting—from Meiji-period Japanese examples to exuberant Art Nouveau-inspired forms—ensure that no aesthetic allegiance goes unrepresented.

And yes, there is glass. A lot of glass. Enough EAPG goblets to host a small army—or at least a very enthusiastic dinner party.

Rounding out the sale are ceramics, textiles (including a rare and rather magnificent Chinese silk embroidery panel), sculpture, and an assortment of objects that defy easy categorization but absolutely deserve attention.

Estimates range from the temptingly accessible to the “clear some wall space and explain it to your spouse later” tier, making this auction equally appealing to seasoned collectors, emerging buyers, and anyone with a weakness for beautiful things and a tolerance for competitive bidding.

In short: it’s eclectic, it’s substantial, and it’s just unpredictable enough to be dangerous.

Proceed accordingly.

The Company will make every reasonable effort to contact the prospective telephone bidder to enable them to bid by phone at the auction, however, the Company does not accept any liability for failure to do so, or for any errors and omissions in connection with the telephone bidding. There is no telephone bidding for a timed auction.

10. Some Lots in the Sale may be subject to a confidential reserve below which the Lot will not be sold. The reserve will not exceed the low estimate of the Lot.

11. The Company reserves the right to withdraw any Property at any time before the hammer falls at its complete discretion, and shall have no liability whatsoever for such withdrawal.

12. The Company reserves the right to reject any bid. The highest bidder acknowledged by the Auctioneer will be the buyer. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the Auctioneer shall have absolute and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder, or to re-offer and re-sell the Property in dispute. If any dispute arises after a sale, the Company’s sale record shall be conclusive and final.
