Auction Description

ART DECO and the MACHINE AGE + by Neue Auctions
Assembled over the last 50 years on acquisition trips across the country from San Francisco, California to Miami, Florida, DiSanto and his partner Wil Weakland lovingly restored many of the pieces and artfully displayed them in their Aurora, Ohio home. Purchases were made from top dealers and augmented with astute flea market and antiques show finds over the years. After concluding that it was time for a new direction, the pair decided to offer the collection en masse through Neue Auctions. Notable lots include a fantastic Art Deco period three panel room divider in the style of Donald Deskey, c.1930. The black ground screen is decorated with geometric blocks in shades of yellow highlighted by silver stripes. A dining room suite commissioned in 1936 by Cleveland School artist Lawrence Blazey for his home and created by the Rorimer and Brooks Company of Cleveland was immaculately restored to its original look. It will be sold as a single lot, and includes dining table and six chairs, sideboard and desk. Examples of Machine Age furniture featuring tubular chromed steel and black leather are abundant, with examples by Wolfgang Hoffmann for Howell, McKay, and others. This includes tables, cabinets, chairs and more. Mid-century modern was a part of the mix and the sale will also include a vintage George Nelson designed Sling Sofa for Knoll, vintage Charles and Ray Eames LCW and DCW plywood chairs and some period lighting pieces. The Tubular chromed steel furnishings were accented by a collection of colorful ceramics and decorative arts including posters, Bauhaus ceramics, Clarice Cliff, and a rare Louis Wain Lucky Futurist Cat Spill Vase. Topping it off is a large color field abstract painting by Japanese American artist Kikuo Saito (1939-2016) entitled Angel’s Knees, executed in 1985. But wait, there’s more! From local estates and collections Neue will also be offering exciting works; notably a work by master goldsmith, jeweler, artist, and craftsman John Paul Miller, in the form of a 18K yellow gold and and tanzanite stylized pendant brooch, along with works by colleagues Jim Mazurkiewicz and Alex Sepkus. Also on offer is a large selection of art from traditional to modern, from a lovely winter scene by Pennsylvania artist Arthur Meltzer (1893-1989 ) Bridge in the Valley, in artist made frame, to a very nice Yaacov Agam Prismograph and two Agamographs. Apropos to the Machine Age subject, there is also a small group of prints from the era; Samuel Margolies, Men of Steel, Louis Lozowick, Tanks #1, and Albert Heckman, View from Tudor City. Read more
