Auction Description

The Art of Currier & Ives by The Old Print Shop, Inc
Currier & Ives, a name so synonymous with American culture that it was given reference in Leroy Anderson song “Sleigh Ride” in 1948, several decades after the firm closed. Currier & Ives was one of the largest print publication firms in the world, publishing well over 7,000 images in their seventy-three year history. Each image was drawn on stone and printed by hand in the traditional method of lithography. Although the steam lithographic press was available at the time, Nathaniel Currier, who founded the firm, did not like the impression quality it produced. So, they stuck with the traditional hand printing methods. Nathaniel Currier himself was a trained lithographer, and his partner, James Merritt Ives, who was a bookkeeper, doubled as a talented draftsman. Some of the other artists and lithographers that worked for the firm include Fanny F. Palmer, John Cameron, Louis Maurer, Thomas Worth, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, and George Durrie. Some of their works are included in this auction. Officially founded in 1835, the firm was first known as N. Currier Lithographer, and would remain that until 1857. During these early years the firm was primarily known as a commercial printing house, printing advertising, letterhead, music sheets or other work that they were paid to produce. Nathaniel Currier wanted to do more than just commercial work, however, and sought other opportunities to sell images to the public. Their first success came in 1840, when they illustrated the sinking of the Steam Ship Lexington and had it published in conjunction with the New York Sun, the largest newspaper in New York City at the time. The image would sell for many years to come. The most productive years for N. Currier and Currier & Ives came in the three decades following 1850. Many of their "famous" images were produced during this period. Sadly, changing public tastes would lead to the firm’s demise in 1907. Photography had become a commercially viable entity towards the end of the 19th century, and lithography lost its popularity with the public as a result. More than a hundred years later, many of Currier & Ives images remain iconic. Read more
