Auction Description

Fine Art & Antiques by Simpson Galleries
Simpson Galleries, Houston’s oldest auction house, is pleased to present an auction series featuring works from the collection of the late art historian, curator, and lecturer David Brauer. The first auction will take place on February 6, 2021, and will highlight key paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures from David E. Brauer’s collection of more than 250 pieces. The sale will feature prints by artists working during the British Pop Art movement including Derek Boshier, Allen Jones, Peter Phillips, Joe Tilson, Richard Hamilton, and Clive Barker, in addition to well-known American artists Vija Celmins, R.B. Kitaj, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Christopher Finch. Also featured in the collection are Texas artists Malinda “Honey” Beeman, Charles Schorre, Richard Stout, Dick Wray, Dorothy Hood, and Earl Staley among many others. A significant number of works featured in the first sale were recently exhibited in “AN ART HISTORIAN COLLECTS: The David E. Brauer Collection” at the Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile, Alabama organized by MMA Director Deborah Velders. A number of works were also included in the 2011 exhibition "British Pop Art Prints: From The Collection of David E. Brauer," UAC Gallery, Houston Baptist University. In addition to this important collection, the auction will include many other notable works from around the world. One such item is a monumental K.P.M. plaque “Springtime” by H. Corner, third quarter 19th century, marked “Rob. Pilz / Vienna.” Silver and items of virtue include a very important tea and coffee service by Gotham in the “Athenic” pattern. This service is one of only a few to ever be offered to the public. Jewelry including rare gemstones such as Kunzite, Emeralds, Diamonds, and rare Jade.    Other categories in this auction include Rare Documents, Prints and Multiples, and Furniture. One document of notable interest is an autograph letter signed by George Washington dated December 19th, 1780, written as the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army at New Windsor. The letter is a financial record, as George Washington requests clothing for the store near his location and reassures Captain Buchanan that financial allowances will be made in response to his request.
