Auction Description

Fine Art & Antiques by Simpson Galleries
Including Fine Art, Works on Paper, Asian Antiques, Continental Furniture, European Decorative Arts, Jewelry, Contemporary Art and, Mid Century Modern Design. This marks the second auction of a series of works belonging to the late David Brauer, a storied art historian, and lecturer. Mr. Brauer focused his life-long passion for art by teaching art history at the Glassell School, The University of Houston, Rice University, and the Museum of Fine Art Houston. This collection is highlighted by works from the famous modernist and figurative painter, Derek Boshier. Among other items in this sale is a large collection of contemporary and mid-century photography. Deaccessioned from a corporate collection, this group of works includes major artists such as Joel Sternfeld, George A. Tice, Keith Carter, and Ann Hamilton. Other highlights include works by Edward Hopper, Edward Seago, William Coply, and Dorothy Hood. Our contemporary art department has noted two works of particular interest, one by American artist Jennie Haddad and the other by Emily Mason. Haddad was a Dallas-based artist originally from Lebanon but trained in New York with Hans Hoffman. Haddad is known for her abstract expressionism. Emily Mason was also an abstract expressionist with an eye for color and constructive composition. Mason also studied in New York. After graduating from the Cooper Union she traveled to Italy to broaden her artistic ability. It was here that she met American abstract landscape painter, Wolf Kahn. The two married shortly after they met. Mason’s mother, Alice Trumbull Mason, was also a notable painter and founding member of the American Abstract Artists group in New York. Read more
