Brice Marden

American, b.1938. After graduating from Yale with his M.F.A. in 1963, Brice Marden moved to New York City and joined the abstract scene creating monochromatic minimalist canvases. By the 1980s, Marden began incorporating more serpentine and linear movements in his paintings, an influence from Chinese calligraphy, which has become his signature. Unlike many of his colleagues who employed bright swaths of color, Marden used a muted palette which has become another signature of his work. He sometimes uses natural implements in place of traditional paint brushes to create more organic compositions.
