Belgian, b.1958. Luc Tuymans was known for his metaphorical and figurative paintings in a color palette dominated by muted grays and rough brush strokes. He is known for a rather subtle, restrained representation of themes ranging from the Holocaust to Walt Disney’s vision of the future. His ideology aimed at instilling a cultural memory and scrutinizing the emotional element in viewers through his paintings. Most of his creations, including Still Life, composed in 2002 as a response to the attacks of 9/11, are subjected to historical events.
