"French-American, 1887-1968. An alumnus at the Académie Julian from 1904, Marcel Duchamp was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His works of painting, sculpture and writing are associated with Cubism, conceptual art, and to a certain extent, Dada. His “readymades”, Bicycle Wheel and Fountain were one of the iconic works that brought him recognition. It also marked the beginning of the 20th-century practice where artistic concepts enjoyed unprecedented emphasis, gaining prominence over craftsmanship and aesthetics. In the later years of his career, he diverted his interest from art created for viewing or what he called “retinal art” to more intellect-challenging practices akin to a game of chess. "
