American, b. 1967. Matthew Barney was a sculptor, performer, artist and filmmaker known for his subjective themes and large-scale projects that developed over the years. The influential contemporary artist created five-feature length films under the title "The Cremaster Cycle", an epic for which he earned most recognition. His works lent Surrealist-inspired, bizarre imagery to the topics of creation, sexual differentiation, psychological identity and mythology. He quoted his interest in dance and aesthetics as a factor that influenced the action in his work to have a choreography-like resemblance.
