French, 1825–1896. Henry Dasson was well recognized as the 19th century Parisian designer of gilt bronze mounted furniture pieces. Unlike his contemporaries at that time, Henry started his artistic career by creating bronze sculptures. His work was characterized by the high quality of bronze and the chiseling technique. His shop was located in 106 rue Vieille-du-Templein Paris, where he specialized in manufacturing furniture with the style of Louis XIV, XV and XVI. He acquired the business of Charles-Guillaume Winckelsen in 1871, renowned for the exceptional pieces of furniture. He then experimented with the craft of ciseleur with the help of Winckelsen.
Between the 1870s and the 1880s, many of Henry’s works were showcased in the Paris Expositions Universelles in the style of Louis XV and XVI along with the furniture designs of his own style. One of the pieces exhibited was a gilt-bronze table, bought by Lord Dudley. His famous imitation of Bureau du Roi was also offered at the exhibition. The piece was later acquired by Lady Ashburton. Henry Dasson’s designs were gradually gaining acclaim, however, their production came to a halt in 1894.
