In 1978, he introduced the Gianni Versace company with his two siblings Santo and Donatella. Presenting a women’s collection in Milan, his designs embraced bold colors, unconventional materials, decadence and rock-and-roll. Within a decade, the Versace siblings had built a fashion empire worth more than 800 million.

The celebrities started taking interest in his designs. Gianni was soon designing for the likes of Elton John, Princess Diana and Madonna. Versace made international headlines in 1994 when Elizabeth Hurley flaunted a Versace on the red carpet of the London film premier. Versace also helped launch the supermodel phenomenon, championing future household names like Cidney Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Elena Christensen and Carla Bruni. The brand was the first luxury house to realize the power of supermodels. The ’90s also saw the launch of its signature fragrance along with a line of home items. Versace dominated the fashion world.

After his untimely death, the weight of the Versace empire fell on Donatella. She became a creative director while Santo became the company’s CEO. Less than six months later, Donatella debuted her first collection at Milan fashion week. Three years later, another Versace dress worn by Jennifer Lopez to the 2000 Grammy Awards made worldwide headlines. Versace remains one of the world’s reading names in fashion.
