Auction Description

A Treasure Trove of Discoveries by Gray's Auctioneers

LOTS OF INTEREST: A CABINET OF WONDERS FOR THE DISCERNING COLLECTOR

Art, History, Science & the Gloriously Specific

What do Pablo Picasso, Commander J.J. Clark, and the Van Sweringen Brothers have in common? Very little — until now. This extraordinary sale brings together objects that span continents, centuries, and disciplines, united only by the conviction that the best things to own are the ones that come with a story worth telling.

LOT 2 — THE ONE THAT PLACED Curtiss Aluminum Propeller Blade, ex-U.S. Navy F6C6, Cleveland Air Race, 1929

Here is a piece of racing history with a gratifyingly specific résumé. This Curtiss aluminum propeller blade flew on Plane #4 — the U.S. Navy's Curtiss F6C6 — piloted by Commander J.J. Clark (1893–1971) at Cleveland's inaugural National Air Race in 1929, where it came in fourth. Not first. Fourth. And yet here you are, nearly a century later, considering whether to hang it above your mantle. Commander Clark went on to become a decorated Vice Admiral. The propeller went on to become this lot. Both had good careers.

LOT 6 — PICASSO AT THE WHEEL "Visage" — Earthenware Plate, Madoura Pottery, 1960. Edition of 100. Diameter: 16 inches.

One hundred were made. One is here. Produced at the legendary Madoura Pottery in Vallauris — the workshop where Picasso devoted himself to ceramics with the full, restless energy he brought to everything — this earthenware plate belongs to a body of work that remains among the most tactile and joyful of his career. "Visage" is not a plate that asks to be eaten from. It asks to be looked at, argued about, and insured.

LOT 5 — THE BELT THAT THINKS IT'S A NECKLACE "Jackie O" Belt/Necklace, designed by Lisa Sotilis for Cartier. Length: 25 inches. Brutalist style.

Designed by Lisa Sotilis for Cartier, this 25-inch statement piece operates in the magnificent grey zone between jewelry and accessory. Wear it at the waist. Wear it at the throat. Wear it somewhere that makes people ask questions you don't fully answer. Its brutalist sensibility — bold, architectural, unapologetically substantial — sits in pleasing tension with the name it carries: Jackie O, the very embodiment of composed, effortless elegance. The tension is the point. This is a piece for someone who already has everything and wants something that contradicts it slightly.

Several lots — THE INSTRUMENTS A Collection of Antique Brass, Glass & Cast Iron Scientific Instruments, including a complete Franz & Pope Autoknitter, Bucyrus, Ohio, with original box.

For the scientifically curious and the design-obsessed alike, John Davidson Jr’s  remarkable collection demands to be touched, cranked, and admired. These are not relics gathering dust behind glass — they are objects with moving parts and opinions about themselves. The crown jewel of the grouping is a complete Franz & Pope Autoknitter from Bucyrus, Ohio, original box included, which is exactly the kind of sentence that means nothing to most people and everything to the right one. If that sentence made your pulse quicken, bid accordingly.

LOT 137 — WASHINGTON'S SIGNATURE, HANDEL'S PROGRAM 18th Century Reverse-Painted Silhouette Portrait on Glass; framed with a program from a performance of Handel's Messiah signed by George Washington.

We will simply describe what this is and allow the silence that follows to do the work. A reverse-painted silhouette on glass — an exquisite and technically demanding art form of the period — has been framed together with a program from a performance of Handel's Messiah bearing the signature of George Washington. The first President of the United States signed, and someone treasured, the program, as one does. That program is now in this frame. That frame is now in this sale. Provenance, if you need it explained, does not get more emphatic than this.

Several lots — PRESIDENTIAL MAGIC LANTERN SLIDES showing: William McKinley's Assassination, Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, Andrew Jackson; with a Brass Chromatrope featuring Ulysses S. Grant.

A visual survey of American presidential history, delivered via the most atmospheric technology the 19th century had to offer. The slides traverse triumph and tragedy — Lincoln, Jackson, Garfield, and the full documented arc of McKinley's assassination rendered in haunting projected glass. The centerpiece of the grouping, however, is the magnificent brass chromatrope featuring Ulysses S. Grant: a spinning optical marvel that wraps his portrait in revolving red, white, and blue banners in mesmerizing, mechanical motion. It is patriotism as kinetic sculpture. It is extraordinary.

LOT 1 — FOR EVERY CLEVELANDER, EVERYWHERE Original Blueprint: Terminal Tower, Cleveland, Ohio — The Van Sweringen Brothers.

Somewhere out there, a Clevelander is living in Austin or Brooklyn or Lisbon, and every time they see a skyline, it isn't quite right. This lot is for that person. An original blueprint of the Van Sweringen Brothers' Terminal Tower — the masterpiece that defined a city's silhouette and broke ground in 1926 — is available for framing, displaying, or simply holding while experiencing a very specific kind of civic pride that no therapist has yet found a name for. It is, in the truest sense, home.

Preview March 12 - 17. All lots available for international shipping. Condition reports available upon request. Gray’s reserves the right to feel particularly proud of  Lot 1.

6. All prospective buyers must register and provide identification before bidding. We may require a valid credit card or other financial references. The Company reserves the right to decline bidder registration, and/or to refuse participation in any auction at any time at the Company’s sole discretion.

7. Registered bidders agree to accept personal responsibility for paying the total purchase price, which includes the Hammer Price plus a buyer’s premium of 25% up to $1,000,000 thereafter 20%, and all applicable taxes. If a bidder would like to appoint an agent (i.e. an identified third party) to bid on their behalf it must be agreed in writing by the Company before the start of an auction, and Gray’s Auctioneers will look to the aforementioned third party for payment.

8. If an Item or Lot receives written bids for identical amounts, and they are the highest bids, the Item or Lot will be sold to the buyer whose written bid was received and accepted first. The Company’s copy of and records regarding receipt and acceptance of any Absentee bid shall be deemed sole evidence and conclusive.

The Company will make every reasonable effort to contact the prospective telephone bidder to enable them to bid by phone at the auction, however, the Company does not accept any liability for failure to do so, or for any errors and omissions in connection with the telephone bidding. There is no telephone bidding for a timed auction.

10. Some Lots in the Sale may be subject to a confidential reserve below which the Lot will not be sold. The reserve will not exceed the low estimate of the Lot.

11. The Company reserves the right to withdraw any Property at any time before the hammer falls at its complete discretion, and shall have no liability whatsoever for such withdrawal.

12. The Company reserves the right to reject any bid. The highest bidder acknowledged by the Auctioneer will be the buyer. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the Auctioneer shall have absolute and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder, or to re-offer and re-sell the Property in dispute. If any dispute arises after a sale, the Company’s sale record shall be conclusive and final.

13. The Auctioneer’s decision to refuse any bid, advance the bidding in any manner, withdraw a Lot, determine a successful bidder, continue the bidding, to cancel a sale and re offer and resell an item in dispute, is conclusive, absolute and final.

14. Title of the property immediately passes to the highest acknowledged bidder when the Auctioneer’s hammer falls, subject to the Terms and Conditions set forth herein, at which point the bidder assumes full risk and responsibility for the Property. The buyer shall pay the full purchase price which includes Hammer price, together with the applicable buyers’ premium PLUS any applicable fees, taxes and shipping costs within five (5) days of the date of sale. Buyer agrees to pay the Company a handling charge of $50 for any check dishonored by the drawee.

15. The Buyer will remove all purchased Property at their own expense within ten (10) days of the date of sale, and if not removed, the Property may be sold by the Company, or removed by the Company to a public warehouse or storage facility, at the sole risk, responsibility and expense of the buyer. The Company will not be responsible for any loss, theft, or damage to any Property remaining on the Company’s premises ten (10) days after the sale. If purchased Property remains on the Company’s premises after ten (10) days, the Company reserves the right to charge a monthly late fee of 10% of the total purchase price, and an additional administrative fee of $200.00 if the Property is not picked up after thirty (30) days. If property has not been shipped or pick-up after sixty (60) days, ownership of property reverts to Gray’s Auctioneers Llc.

16. If the buyer fails to pay in full with good cleared funds, or fails to comply with the Terms and Conditions of the Sale as set forth herein, the Company reserves the right to exercise one or more of the following remedies, in addition to any other remedies available to the Company by law:

17. The Company offers in-house shipping on selected lots. The Company will also provide a successful bidder with a list of alternative shippers. However, the Company will not be responsible for the acts or omissions of carriers or packers engaged by the buyer whether or not such shipper was listed by the Company. Property will not be released to a third party shipper without the buyer’s consent, and unless the Company is in receipt of full payment. Any packing, handling, and shipping by the Company is at the entire risk of the buyer and the Company bears no liability for any loss or damage to such items. The cost of shipment and insurance will be Buyer’s full responsibility.

18. If a purchased Lot, for any reason, cannot be delivered in the same condition as at the time of sale, or should any purchased Lot be stolen, mis-delivered or lost prior to delivery, the Company shall not be liable for any amount paid by the purchaser.

19.
