Harvey Probber

American, 1922-2003. Harvey Probber was born in Brooklyn, Newyork, with a keen interest of loving and understanding the world. Probber became one of the most brilliant and innovative furniture designer of the era. Early on, Probber started working in a local furniture shop while he was in high school. Keen on designing, Probber’s first design got him $10 when he was 16. After graduating high school, he travelled to Manhattan to sell sketches in the furniture industry. After years of struggle, and alternative career as a Coast Guard and a Cabret Singer, Probber started his own company in 1945, at the age of 23. The Harvery Probber Inc., from there on would create him a sensation in the furniture industry.

Probber during his prime time designed ideas that were extremely innovative. He was in a generation of young risk takers in designing industry. Although his design style was modern, he choose hand rubbed finishes and lacquer wood which were neglected by the then modernists. The biggest breathough in Probber’s career came when he was looking at seating furniture and realized the key to comfort is in bits and pieces. He then went onto give the world the sectional and modular seating, one that would make him a sensation.
